CAC’s Margie Alt on Yet Another Nearly Billion Dollar Trump Bribe to Stop Wind Energy in California, Maine and New York
WASHINGTON-Today, the Trump Interior Department announced it would pay another wind energy developer, Invenergy, $765 million to abandon four offshore wind leases in the Atlantic and Pacific, the third such deal the Trump administration has struck to cancel offshore wind projects. With this agreement, the administration has now committed roughly $2.5 billion to companies to walk away from clean energy development, money which the companies have committed to redirecting toward new natural gas plants and other fossil fuel infrastructure.
Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement in response:
“Let’s be clear about what the Trump administration just did: they spent another $765 million for a total of $2.5 billion in taxpayer money to bribe wind energy companies to stop developing clean, affordable power. This is power that we desperately need to meet surging electricity demand. Power that would lower our skyrocketing bills. Power that would cut the pollution driving the deadly heat waves and superstorms that are already pummeling American communities with a tragic extreme weather summer predicted.
“Instead of solving Americans’ problems, Trump is paying off foreign and American energy conglomerates with American taxpayer dollars and propping up fossil fuel companies to build more dirty and expensive energy plants. The result: we will pay more for electricity, breathe more pollution, bake in record heat, and foot the tab for his vendetta against wind turbines.
“This is the president who campaigned on affordability. The one who promised to lower our costs. Instead he has engineered a scheme that forces Americans to pay higher bills, get dirtier air, and face more deadly and expensive extreme weather. In Trump’s plan, we personally bankroll the death of cheaper and healthier clean energy while the climate crisis gets worse.
“That’s not an energy policy. That’s a deadly and expensive con.”
