Michigan Summer Camp Shifts Schedules To Adjust For Extreme Heat

"“Once a heat advisory was issued, Sherman Lake Summer Camp staff developed a plan. ‘We changed our schedule to have the hottest part of the day inside in our large gymnatorium,’ Alex Kinney, the Summer Camp Director at Sherman Lake Summer Camp, said. ‘Our snack and story time, our closing ceremonies, and simple games are now indoors at the end of the day.’ Outdoor activities are being held in the morning and early afternoon, such as archery, boating and rock climbing. Those activities are being done at a slower pace to keep kids from overexerting themselves.” "

Heat Prompts Change Of Plans For Summer Camps

"“‘We are always providing sunscreen to our kids and campers if they forgot to bring their own or if they don’t have any at home — we’ll have extras of that for our campers to use,’ Marquardt explained. ‘In addition to that, we’re keeping some additional water at our camp locations. We’ve got freezers at each of our locations to keep some good chilled ice on hand.’ The biggest precaution will be spending about 50 percent more time indoors or in cooler places than as originally scheduled. Marquardt explains indoor facilities at all camps allow staff to safely have playtime in cases of extreme heat.” "

August 2024: Grand Rapids Public Schools Closed Due To Extreme Heat

The temperature is expected to be in the low 90s, but extreme humidity will make it feel like up to 96 degrees. The first day of the new school school was Aug. 19. Grand Rapids is the largest district in the region, enrolling over 13,800 students last school year.” "

IN THE NEWS

Extreme heat, driven by climate change, has resulted in 9 of the 15 hottest years in Metro Detroit since 2001. Unsafe conditions, due to extreme heat, put our students, educators and families–especially those with existing medical conditions–at risk. Educators have trouble teaching and students have trouble learning when school is interrupted. Here are recent examples of how extreme heat in Michigan has caused extreme absence
