WASHINGTON–Today, President Biden announced the awardees of its $3 billion Clean Ports Program meant to clean up air pollution associated with freight trucks and port equipment. In response, Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, issued the following statement:
“President Biden’s and EPA Administrator Regan’s work to clean up ports is a game-changer for our nation’s environment, economy, and communities. Through a groundbreaking $3 billion investment made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, the EPA’s Clean Ports Program is set to transform our ports, reduce pollution, and improve air quality. This initiative is more than a step forward in tackling climate change; it’s an essential measure to protect the health and quality of life of those living and working near these freight hubs.
For too long, neighborhoods near ports, especially those in communities of color and low-income neighborhoods, have suffered the severe health impacts of dangerous and deadly diesel and industrial pollution. This investment by the Biden administration is a pivotal move towards addressing these long-standing injustices. By deploying zero-pollution technology and replacing heavily polluting freight trucks, the Clean Ports Program will drastically cut harmful pollution, directly benefiting workers and nearby residents alike.
The Biden administration’s support of the EPA’s initiative sends a clear message that environmental justice and climate action are national priorities. We applaud this strong and comprehensive approach to tackling pollution in our ports. It will have a transformative effect on communities across the country.”
