Dangerous Decision to Freeze Federal Grants & Loans
WASHINGTON – On Monday evening, several media outlets shared an internal memorandum issued by the White House Office of Management and Budget ordering federal agencies to freeze all grant and loan disbursements. The move, which triggered widespread chaos and confusion, throws into doubt critical programs designed to grow the economy, protect public health, safeguard our environment, and support disadvantaged Americans. The following statement is from Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign.
“In just eight days, President Trump has thrown the federal government into chaos. This latest salvo freezing all federal grants and loans defies the law and will do immeasurable damage to the American people and the economy. This is about more than just dollars spent. It’s a direct assault on public health, job creation, our environment, and support for disadvantaged Americans. Without access to these funds, families will struggle to pay utility bills, small businesses could fall short on payroll, people recovering from extreme weather disasters could be left without critical aid and much more.
“The country has been reaping the benefits of federal funding for decades and especially in the past two years thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These benefits, including incentives that have allowed the clean energy industry to create highly skilled, good-paying jobs, are now threatened. In addition, programs like the Low Income Energy Assistance Program – which has helped millions of Americans manage extreme temperatures – are now in question.
“This president, and his administration, clearly do not care about making people’s lives better. We urge lawmakers and the courts to reject this all-out assault on the law and the American people.”
