CAC: Congress Hands Trump a ‘Blank Check’ for Health, Climate Destruction

WASHINGTON–Today, the Senate voted to pass legislation that makes massive cuts to disaster relief, flood risk protections and more while handing Donald Trump and Elon Musk a "blank check" to expand their unconstitutional power grab. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), issued the following statement:

“Today, the Senate voted to keep the government lights on. Yet in the same breath, they removed what little restraint was left on the Trump administration as it tramples our most basic rights, dismantles safeguards against extreme weather, and eliminates investments and standards meant to keep our air safe to breathe and our water safe to drink.

"The Trump administration seems determined to allow their buddies in the fossil fuel industry to yank us back to a time where our skies were choked with smog and our rivers filled with toxic sludge. Trump and Republicans’ embrace of rich polluters means we’re all-but guaranteed to see more frequent and catastrophic storms and wildfires. Drastic cuts to the staff and budgets of the National Weather Service, FEMA, and the EPA will leave our communities dangerously unprepared when disaster strikes and without lifesaving aid in the aftermath. The most vulnerable among us are likely to be hit first and worst.

"Instead of acting as a co-equal branch of government, House Republicans and a majority of senators chose to hand unchecked control of our taxpayer dollars and our families’ health and futures over to the cruel and chaotic whims of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. No responsible Member of Congress should have supported this bill – shame on those who did.

"But let’s be very clear: When people get sick and die from air pollution, when costs of energy and groceries soar, when storms and fires reduce communities to rubble, Trump and Musk and the Republicans controlling Congress along with the fossil fuel industry will bear the responsibility."
