CAC: Hurricane Helene Devastates Communities Demonstrating Imperative for Climate Action
We must invest in solutions that tackle the cause of the climate crisis – which makes storms like Helene exponentially more devastating.
Hurricane Helene was the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in that region of the Gulf Coast, delivering record storm surge, catastrophic flooding, and dangerous winds to millions of Americans across the Southeast. We mourn with those who have lost loved ones and communities picking up the pieces in Helene’s aftermath, and are keeping those who may still be in danger in our thoughts.
As the storm continues to pound interior areas across the Southeast, we must acknowledge the reality that climate change is the cause of these storms becoming increasingly deadly and destructive. Catastrophic storms at the level of Hurricane Helene used to be rare; now they are the norm. Communities in the path of the storm will need months, even years, and billions of dollars to recover from this devastating event. Rather than paying this tragic price, we must invest in solutions that would directly tackle the climate crisis which has set the table for Helene’s steep cost.
