CAC on the EPA’s Attacks to Federal Climate and Pollution Protections
WASHINGTON–Today, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin unveiled a hit list featuring 31 federal climate and health protections the administration plans to eliminate. The list includes everything from limiting soot pollution and carbon pollution from power plants and tailpipes and even takes aim at the legal basis for enforcement of the Clean Air Act, known as the “endangerment finding” which holds that carbon dioxide, methane, and other climate-changing pollutants are dangerous to our health and well-being and must be regulated. In response, CAC Director Margie Alt issued the following statement:
“In Trump and Zeldin’s America, chaos, confusion and cruelty is the rule; protecting people from pollution is the exception. Today’s announcement proposes a series of actions that, like most big pronouncements from this administration, will likely meet their demise in court.
"But the list is an important reminder of where this administration’s priorities lie. It would put every American at greater risk from dangerous and deadly pollution while fast tracking a get-richer-quick scheme for big polluters. It prioritizes burning filthy fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal over protecting clean air and clean water. It would ensure the climate disasters we are experiencing now will only get more frequent and more catastrophic. And it would make big polluter CEOs even richer while saddling the rest of us with shorter life spans, more disease, and higher costs.
“Today’s announcement makes clear the EPA has officially abandoned its mission to protect health and the environment. Thankfully, Trump and Zeldin can’t rescind these protections with the stroke of a pen. We will be there to defend our climate and health every step of the way.”
