CAC on the Passing of Rep. Raúl Grijalva
WASHINGTON–Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., passed away Thursday after a battle with cancer. In 2023, the Climate Action Campaign named Grijalva a Climate Changemaker in recognition of his leadership on climate, clean energy, and environmental justice. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), issued the following statement:
"The people of Arizona and all of us who care about justice and the environment are better for having had Raúl Grijalva in our corner. For the past two decades in Congress and as Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Rep. Grijalva championed protections for us all. He fought to hold polluters accountable for the harms they have perpetrated on the climate and vulnerable communities; his leadership helped preserve millions of acres of public lands and waters from drilling and other exploitation. Rep. Grijalva for years championed the A. Donald McEachin Environmental Justice for All Act, the most comprehensive environmental justice legislation ever considered by Congress which would provide a more just and more equitable future for all people living in the U.S.
"We are proud to have worked alongside Rep. Grijalva as a Climate Changemaker and a partner in his tireless work for the climate, environmental justice, Indigenous rights, and all Arizonans.
"Our hearts go out to his loved ones, his staff, and his constituents in the 7th District. He will be deeply missed."
