CAC Responds to National Weather Service’s Decision to End Foreign Language Weather Forecast Translations
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Weather Service (NWS) has allowed a critical contract with a translation provider to lapse, ending the availability of weather forecast translations in Spanish, Chinese and other languages for around 30 cities across the U.S. The following statement is from Margie Alt, Executive Director of the Climate Action Campaign:
"The National Weather Service plays a vital role in protecting lives by providing critical weather and climate forecasts to residents, schools, hospitals, businesses and others throughout the U.S. and its territories. These alerts save lives and keep people informed in real time — especially now, as thunderstorms, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires grow more frequent and more severe due to climate change.
The decision to let the contract for Spanish and other language translations expire is cynical and shortsighted — and it’s dangerous. It undermines the fundamental right for millions of Americans to access life-saving information during climate emergencies. This is another assault on climate protections and community safety and a reckless abandonment of the many communities who deserve protection from extreme weather.”
