CAC Welcomes New NDC: We Must Continue Work Toward Ambitious Climate Goals
WASHINGTON–Today, the Biden-Harris administration unveiled ambitious national climate targets that would commit the United States to cut climate pollution by 61 to 66% below 2005 levels by 2035, an increase from the current national commitment to reduce emissions 50 to 52% by 2030. The new U.S. Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) mandated under the Paris Climate Agreement also reaffirms the need for a global transition away from fossil fuels, the primary source of climate-harming pollution, and calls for reducing methane, a climate superpollutant, by 35% in the next decade. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), issued the following statement:
“This ambitious NDC reflects the scientific imperative to urgently reduce climate pollution, keeping a path open to avoiding the worst climate outcomes. Cutting climate pollution and ending our reliance on fossil fuels is the best, most effective way to slow the pace of climate change, prevent catastrophic extreme weather disasters, protect our families’ health, and save lives that would be lost to dangerous air pollution.
“Thanks to President Biden’s leadership, the U.S. is a leader for global climate ambition. The 2035 NDC builds on this administration’s historic legacy on climate, from the Inflation Reduction Act delivering the largest ever investment in climate and clean energy to enacting numerous strong Solutions for Pollution that are reducing climate and air pollution. We must ensure the U.S. continues to work aggressively to meet these goals and spur our clean energy future. Our climate can’t wait.”
