CAC: Zeldin, Musk Ignore Court Orders with More Illegal Cancellations Targeting Most Vulnerable
WASHINGTON–EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin on Monday announced the cancellation of 400 grants related to environmental justice and diversity initiatives, such as Community Change Grants, which provide assistance in reducing pollution and building climate resilience in disadvantaged communities. The announcement comes after the Supreme Court and other federal courts have repeatedly ruled against Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s illegal freeze of obligated federal spending – including an order upheld today explicitly forbidding federal agencies to terminate "equity-related" grants or contracts. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), issued the following statement:
"Cleaning up pollution is only ‘wasteful’ if you don’t believe everyone in America has the equal right to breathe clean air. Helping communities better withstand the impacts of climate change is only ‘unnecessary’ if you think innocent people deserve to suffer from the increasingly catastrophic climate impacts.
"Lee Zeldin’s idea of ‘accountability’ is apparently to create a world of hurt for the most vulnerable while spitting in the face of the law and giving wealthy corporate interests the ability to pollute at will. All the while Elon Musk lines his pockets with billions of taxpayer dollars as his so-called efficiency agents take a hatchet to programs designed to help people at risk survive.
"Congress must put a stop to Trump’s brazen refusal to follow the law and demand these illegally canceled funds already promised to disadvantaged communities are released."
