CAC Welcomes New NDC: We Must Continue Work Toward Ambitious Climate Goals
WASHINGTON–Tonight, the Congress passed a government funding bill that included $100 billion in disaster aid to replenish the depleted accounts of FEMA, the Department of Agriculture, and other federal agencies helping victims of extreme weather recover from climate-fueled disasters like Hurricane Helene. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), issued the following statement:
“This year, we saw a series of devastating climate disasters, which inflicted hundreds of billions of dollars in damage and cost hundreds of lives. People are sorely in need of the aid that is now – finally – on its way to help rebuild. Threatening to hold disaster aid back and to shut down the government to advance petty partisan politics was an appalling display of how the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress may plan to respond to crises on their watch.
“As the climate crisis continues to worsen, agencies like FEMA will need more and more disaster funding to help people recover from increasingly frequent and costly disasters. The price tag will only go up if President-elect Trump undoes pollution standards and rolls back climate protections. All Americans will pay the price.”
