Climate Action Campaign’s Alt Responds to Doug Burgum’s Confirmation as Secretary of the Interior
Washington – Following the Senate confirmation of Doug Burgum as Secretary of the Interior, Climate Action Campaign Director Margie Alt issued the following statement:
“The confirmation of Doug Burgum as secretary of the Interior is a deeply troubling step backward for the stewardship of our public’s lands, the health of our environment, and the future of our economy. Burgum has aligned himself with Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, a radical, anti-clean energy plan designed to prioritize oil and gas profits over the wellbeing of American families, our national parks and forests, and wildlife.
As Interior Secretary, Burgum is supposed to protect and conserve the hundreds of millions of acres of public lands, forests and coastline – but his track record suggests he will treat them as nothing more than a playground for polluters. He has already signaled his intention to put out the welcome mat for his oil and gas buddies to plunder our parks and other public lands, irreparably damaging our air, water, and wildlife habitat in the process. Burgum’s policies will accelerate climate change, worsen public health, and harm the great outdoors that Americans cherish, leaving the rest of us to bear the cost of extreme weather, rising energy bills, and degraded public lands.
Poll after poll shows that Americans, across party lines, support clean air, water, and energy, as well as protecting public lands. Burgum’s confirmation is a direct message that this administration favors the opinions and wealth of a few well placed and deep-pocketed polluters over the vast majority of Americans. Americans deserve leaders who will protect us and our most sacred lands for future generations – not auction it off to the highest bidder.”
