CAC’s Margie Alt On Congressional Republicans Weak, Rushed Budget Resolution Passage

WASHINGTON–On Thursday, despite weeks of internal chaos and pushback, House Republicans narrowly passed the budget resolution. The following statement is from Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign:

“It would take a lot to rival the climate attacks we’ve already witnessed from this administration, but the congressional Republican leadership is going to try. By passing this reckless, partisan spending plan, Republican leaders in Congress are moving ahead with a plan that inflicts enormous damage to our health and environment as well as our pocketbooks to pay off big polluters and give tax breaks to the rich.

“This is a hideously amazing spending blueprint. Courtesy of Donald Trump and congressional Republican leadership, the American people could experience massive spending cuts that could gut climate and clean energy investments, major giveaways to fossil fuel companies, and the widespread sell-off of public lands for private profit. If congressional Republicans succeed, household energy costs will rise, jobs will be lost, and communities will suffer from more pollution. Public health will worsen and families like ours would bear the cost of it all. In the long term, the toll of extreme weather and the cost of disaster recovery will continue to rise because of this law.

“What Republicans are enacting is also deeply unpopular. Our health and our environment may have lost this battle, but we’re going to continue mobilizing and organizing. We’re going to continue to fight for clean air, clean water and climate action. Eventually the public and science will prevail.”
