CAC’s Margie Alt Responds to EPA Staff Cuts
WASHINGTON – The Trump administration’s relentless assault on science and career expertise at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continued today with the firing of almost 400 staff — even after Administrator Lee Zeldin and Vice President J.D. Vance said two weeks ago that they need EPA experts to deliver on their promises to the American people. Some 2,300 staff were also fired from the Interior Department, including about 800 from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which oversees energy projects on public lands. The following statement is from Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign:
“By wholesale firing scientists, people in charge of responding to local emergencies like train derailments and fires, and other experts who work to protect us from air pollution and the pollution driving the climate crisis, this administration is once again putting corporate polluters’ profits ahead of people’s lives. This reckless purge will leave agencies crippled – unable to adequately enforce laws designed to keep our air and water clean, and unable to respond to the escalating climate emergency we are experiencing daily across the nation.
“The consequences of a gutted EPA and Interior will be deadly. Thousands of lives will be put at risk from increased pollution, toxic exposure, and climate-fueled disasters. Science, not politics, should guide environmental policy. Weakening the EPA in this way is not just an attack on experts; it is an attack on all Americans who depend on clean air, clean water, and a livable future.”
