CAC’s Margie Alt Responds to FEMA Illegally Freezing Grant Funding
WASHINGTON– On Monday, hours after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to stop freezing federal funding, a senior FEMA official defied the order and directed staff to place a hold on grant funding. The following statement is from Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign:
“The Trump administration’s brazen decision to ignore a federal judge’s order and unlawfully freeze FEMA grants is an appalling attack on the American people, public safety and the rule of law. These funds help Americans in need and are critical for emergency preparedness, homeland security, fighting wildfires, among other essential services. By defying the court, the administration didn’t just undermine democracy – it put lives at risk. This decision is all the more tragic, cynical and inexplicable, given the multiple deadly climate fueled disasters we have already experienced in the few short weeks since 2025 started. And they’re only becoming more frequent.
“This reckless abuse of power is not just an assault on the judiciary and rule of law – it’s an attack on every community that depends on these grants for safety and security. It’s lawlessness, plain and simple, and it cannot be tolerated.”
