CAC’s Margie Alt Responds to Research Showing World is on Track to Surpass 1.5°C of Warming

WASHINGTON-On Monday, two new studies were published that concluded that the world is on track to surpass 1.5°C of warming, exceeding the targeted limit set by the international Paris Climate Agreement. Despite increasingly dire evidence that the world is far off track from the climate pollution reductions needed to avoid the worst outcomes, President Trump has pulled the country out of the Paris Agreement, frozen climate and clean energy investments, promised to slash funding and staff across critical environmental agencies – even those responsible for providing life-saving extreme weather forecasts and warnings – and directed agencies to scrub the words “climate change” from government websites. The following statement is from Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign:

“Surpassing this critical climate tipping point will mean more of the catastrophic wildfires, devastating flooding and life-threatening hurricanes that we’re already seeing become more frequent and damaging year after year. Donald Trump is ignoring the advice of nearly every climate expert that says we must cut fossil fuel pollution, and is instead seeking to increase our expensive reliance on fossil fuels while systematically attacking and rolling back the gains on climate and clean energy the U.S had already made.

“As much as Donald Trump would like to ignore climate change, denying it exists won’t make it go away. Delaying action that would reduce climate pollution will only make climate disasters more costly and more devastating to American families. Experts agree that we can – we must – still make progress towards the Paris goal of cutting climate pollution and avoiding the warming that comes with it. That means standing up to the Trump administration’s attacks on climate and clean energy investments and protecting the progress our nation is making against climate change while improving public health and creating good-paying jobs. The future of our climate – of our world – depends on it.”
