Washington, DC Today, President Biden announced that he will no longer be seeking re-election as president of the United States. Starting on Day 1, the Biden-Harris administration has taken more than 300 actions to protect the environment and the climate and achieved the most significant climate progress in history. In response, Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, issued the following statement:

“In his four years as president of the United States, Joe Biden moved the nation forward in many ways, but in no area was he more effective than in tackling the climate crisis. Without a doubt, President Biden lived up to his pledge to be the Climate President!

“President Biden is a transformative figure in the nation’s fight against the climate crisis, fulfilling his promise to take bold climate action and positioning the United States as a global leader in this effort. His leadership has been significant, meaningful, and will deliver results for decades. We thank him for his achievements and his lifetime commitment to fighting climate change.

“A cornerstone of the president’s accomplishments is his Climate and Clean Energy Plan included in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022. This landmark legislation unequivocally marks the largest investment in climate action in American history, and likely the world’s, dedicating hundreds of billions of dollars in investments to clean energy initiatives, limiting climate pollution, promoting environmental justice and making the transition to a clean energy economy.

“His accomplishments aren’t limited to the IRA. President Biden made historic progress through executive actions and international diplomacy: rejoining the Paris Agreement on his first day in office; enacting countless Solutions for Pollution to limit pollution from power plants, vehicles, and the oil and gas industry; and investing in clean energy manufacturing, electric vehicle infrastructure, and making communities more resilient to the impacts of climate change we already experience.

“President Biden’s focus on environmental justice will ensure that the benefits of climate action reach all communities, especially those disproportionately affected by carbon and other pollution. The Biden-Harris administration’s decisive actions have set the United States on a path toward a sustainable future. President Biden’ unparalleled legacy in tackling the climate crisis and eliminating pollution that damages our health assures us of a more resilient and equitable future.

“Thank you, President Biden, for your unwavering dedication to securing a healthier climate for generations to come and for being the Climate President. You have made our country healthier, safer, and more resilient. In your honor, and for our own sakes, we remain committed to finishing the job. Regardless of who the next president is, it will be important to remain steadfast in advancing climate action and protecting President Biden’s climate legacy.”
